CREATING INTEGRATED, SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
Communicare is the oldest Social Housing Institution (SHI) in the country. Formed in 1929 to help address the housing crisis in the Western Cape, Communicare is a Non Profit Company (NPC) with the by-line “Buildling homes and communities”. It’s vision is to ‘create affordable housing by creating integrated sustainable communities’. Communicare owns and manages 3400 rental units in well located areas for households earning R1 500 – R7 500 per month.
In addition to its core business managed by the Social Housing Division, the organisation has two separate property brands offering a range of accommodation options. ‘Yes Properties’ develops GAP Housing targeting middle income groups and also sells bonded properties aimed at high income earners. ‘Cape Retirement Lifestyles’ manages five Life Rights Villages providing retirement accommodation and Healthcare to pensioners. A percentage of the profit generated by these divisions is invested in a Reserve Fund to ensure the continued roll out of social housing rental stock.
The sustainability of the Social Housing programme is underpinned by an integrated community development strategy based on our philosophy that we build not only homes but also develop communities. The community development programmes aim to achieve three fundamental outcomes namely :
- Tenants and communities who are engaged and active in their complexes and broader communities
- Tenants and communities who have access to opportunities for personal growth and economic empowerment
- Tenants and communities who value and embrace diversity
Since its inception Communicare has left deep imprints on the landscape of Cape Town and is positioning itself to increase its rental stock in well located areas by a further 3000 units over the next five years.
