Steve Tshwete Housing Association is a non profit company. It was established in 2000 to develop and manage affordable rental housing in the Middelburg area of Mpumalanga.
Our establishment was motivated by the huge demand for housing in the Middelburg area. Previously employers were important providers of housing in the area. When they stopped doing this, it left low and moderate income households without sufficient housing opportunities.
Our establishment was motivated by the huge demand for housing in the Middelburg area. Previously employers were important providers of housing in the area. When they stopped doing this, it left low and moderate income households without sufficient housing opportunities.
Our first development was the Hope City project of 501 units. It was also one of the first social housing projects in the country and was financed through government subsidy and a loan from NHFC. It provides affordable self contained rental units in a rapidly developing part of Middelburg.
We also have a strong presence in the former African township of Middelburg, Mhluzi Township. Here we have converted hostels into 84 self contained flats that provide family accommodation. A further 107 units in this area using the land between the original hostel buildings was developed. We run our housing management service from the centre of the town.
